Dr. Askar Chukmaitov is an associate professor of health policy in the VCU School of Public Health and Director of the VCU-Bolashak International Scholarship Program (VCU-BISP). As director, he oversees the management, coordination, and implementation of the program.
A native of Kazakhstan, Dr. Chukmaitov has extensive experience in implementing USAID- and World Bank-funded health projects in Central Asia and Kazakhstan. Dr. Chukmaitov conducts comparative effectiveness research that spans health systems and delivery reform, cancer care delivery, Accountable Care Organizations, and outcomes research. He previously directed the VCU-Bolashak Program (2013–2017) and now leads its renewed expansion, leading public health, clinical, and research training for visiting scholars. He earned his M.D. from Kazakh National Medical University, an MPA from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, and a Ph.D. in Health Services Organization and Research from Virginia Commonwealth University.
